Is 40 the new 30?

It’s hard to believe it’s been so long since my last blog…again! How do the weeks fly by so quickly? Can you relate?

Anyway, mostly I keep my blog about all things writing, but since I last blogged I’ve clocked a pretty big milestone…I am now 40. And tonight I’m having a party to celebrate – or perhaps commiserate. So I’ve got sushi, hot finger food and a cake organised (very late though – I only ordered the cake yesterday!). And I somehow manage to pick out a little black dress in half an hour (a record by anyonne’s standards, I’m sure).

I’ve also sent my DJ a list of some of the essential tunes for this evening. The list includes:

Stevie Wonder
Sly and the Family Stone
Depeche Mode
Bee Gees
Madonna
ABBA
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
The Smiths
Prince
Blondie
WHAM!

And a few specific song requests like “I’m too sexy”. What a classic!

So, what do you think of my selections? Any favourites? I know – probably not many people who liked The Smiths and Madonna at the same time, but I did/do! Although the fact that I liked Madonna definitely reduced by ‘street-cred’ amongst my Smiths-loving friends.

While I’m Voguing, I might spare a thought for Sophie and my new character, but if not there’s always tomorrow!

  1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Oh, to be turning 40 again. That was my best time of life. As I saw it life begins at 40. Not so young you worry about everything, not so old you can’t do everything – ha ha. I’ll be turning 65 in July. Now that a milestone to go yipes over – ha ha.

  2. Happy Birthday! :) I’m about to be 30 and I still feel 19 so I think you’re entirely right that 40 is the new 30. Besides, if you’re Voguing, eating sushi, wearing that little black dress and writing rockin’ books you’re definitely younger than the candles on your birthday cake might suggest!

  3. Happy birthday Phillipa, I hope you have a great time at your party. I certainly cannot imagine you picking out a LBD in minutes after watching/helping you to pick out a bikini at Noosa before your holiday with your sister. Hope your family is well and look forward to reading more from you. Liz Catanese.

  4. Happy birthday, hope you had a wonderful night and know how you feel I turned 40 in feb, doesnt feel any different though, not yet anyway lol.
You’re missing some Kylie Minogue on your artists there, and some older classics like cold chisel, ac/dc, midnight oil, all essential aussie artists for a party in my opinion anyway lol. Enjoy your 40th and look forward to reading the ending of Coming Home after the editors have finished.

  7. Thanks for all the birthday wishes (and additional song suggestions). There was some Kylie, but not really any true Aussie rock! Had a great night – thanks again, everyone.

  8. P.D.,
Happy B.D.! Forty, you’re just a baby! But you have the mind and imagination of someone very wise. You would have to to be able to create such a wonderful character as Sophie and her amazing adventures. August 1, two months from tomorrow, but who’s counting. Be well.

  9. Hi Phillipa, Happy Birthday. Turning 40 is not something you glance over in a haste. I hope you have celebrated your fab 40 with flare. I like most of your music selections. The ones I don’t comment on are the ones I’m not really familiar with. Maybe I would be if I heard them on the radio or CD.
Anyway, take care and you should celebrate at lest for one month.
    Cheers
    Monica
